The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Zen Buddhism

From Booklist
This encyclopedia covers fairs, texts, doctrine, rituals, practices, biographies, deities and heroes, structure, mythology, sects, and associations of the spiritual culture coated. one of the greater than 1,700 entries are Dogen Kigan, Filial piety, and Shikhin Buddha. a lot of the content material contains brief, dictionary-type definitions, even though a few (for instance, Bodhisattva precepts, Buddha, Pilgrimage) are extra expansive. The illustrations are all black and white, happen on nearly one-quarter of the pages, and typically disguise lower than part a web page. The entries comprise broad cross-references, and the "Contents through Subject" first and foremost of the encyclopedia aids the reader in finding thematically comparable entries. The insurance of the topic parts is good.
The encyclopedia might have been enormously stronger with the inclusion of glossaries giving the phrases within the a number of languages concerned. A thesaurus of Sanskrit, chinese language characters, pinyin and Wade-Giles chinese language transliteration tools, and transliterated eastern might considerably elevate the application. even if the quantity is sufficient for the final reader, this conspicuous omission limits its usefulness for the worse researcher.

Libraries that have already got universal faith reference resources, reminiscent of Eliade's The Encyclopedia of faith (Macmillan, 1987), will most likely locate no cause so as to add this new encyclopedia to their collections. another topic encyclopedias can also be extra priceless. for instance, Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia (Kodansha, 1993) contains the chinese language characters with eastern transliterations besides a ways stronger illustrations and offers solid insurance of spiritual subject matters. notwithstanding, educational libraries assisting huge spiritual experiences departments will want to purchase The Ilustrated Encyclopedia of Zen Buddhism for the further insurance. Public libraries that experience no different assets on Zen Buddhism may additionally think about it. RBB

Everything is decaying. And that particular grossness or that funkiness begins to give us some kind of feedback. It does not match our own state of experience, basically. Our own experience has become a hoping for a better world, hoping for some much greater level of experience. We hope for happiness and pleasure only. For instance, all sorts of little complaints have come up during this seminary, and however small people's complaints may b~, individually they are not happy enough. We expect great happiness and harmony.

That seems to be problematic. Usually our basic slogan, so to speak, or our party line for that matter is to talk about somebody being on the path. Well, the idea is that we are on a path; we have not just parked our trailer in somebody's back yard, and made it into a house which still has wheels but without any function. In this case we are talking about riding in the yana principle: we are actually in a particular carriage which moves along some kind of road. Of course the road could take different forms, very rough or very smooth or whatever, but we are still moving along on the road.

So very funky, in other words. Gross, funky. Since everything is subject to death and decay all the time, it is basically very funky. Something could be beautifully fantastic and artful, even a 35 tastefully put together art work, but it is still very gross because everything is subject to death. Everything is decaying. And that particular grossness or that funkiness begins to give us some kind of feedback. It does not match our own state of experience, basically. Our own experience has become a hoping for a better world, hoping for some much greater level of experience.
